Skills, interest, critical awareness, perceived fit between agency and service user needs, and resource accessibility are all essential if practitioners are to engage with the challenges and opportunities presented by developments in ICT. They overlap. Take resources and skills. We mentioned earlier the comments of social workers in an evaluation of a practitioner research network. The final report concluded that practitioner research supported at agency level is likely to focus attention on the general adequacy of agency-wide IT systems and the way this is complicated by practitioners’ acknowledged limitations in ICT skills.
